Kingsferry Lift Bridge

Kingsferry Lift Bridge

Opened in 1960

Kinsferry Bridge links the Isle of Sheppey with mainland Kent. Until 2006 the A249 and rail link both crossed the bridge which spans the Swale; the A249 has now been diverted across a new high level fixed bridge.
The four towers house the lifting and counterbalance mechanism which raises the deck vertically above the navigation clearance.
This type of moving bridge is generally considered to be the most economical in terms of lifting power required, but are regarded by many to be too intrusive on the landscape.
