Loco Lift Bridge

Loco Lift Bridge

Originally Constructed c1865

Loco lift bridge spans the Huddersfield Broad Canal and was originally constructed in timber in 1865 when it replaced an earlier swing bridge. Counterbalance weights assisted in lifting the 5.3m span deck vertically; the lifting operation used to be carried out manually using a winch and pulley system, but the operation is now carried out electronically.

The bridge was reconstructed in steel in 1975 and listed as an ancient monument in 1977.
