Bridge Design and Assessment Projects

Below are some examples of the bridge projects undertaken by David Childs.

Design

Cutsyke Railway Bridge

Cutsyke Railway Bridge, a 38m skew span composite steel and concrete deck, was designed for Wakfield MDC to carry the Glass Houghton Coalfields Link Road over the Methley to Pontefract Railway Line. The bridge was designed to carry HA loading and 37½ units of HB to BD 37/01.

Thornes Lane Footbridge

Thornes Lane Footbridge, an integral prestressed concrete inverted T beam deck founded on steel H piles, was designed for Wakefield MDC to carry footpath / cycleway and accidental wheel loading to BD 37/01. Thornes Lane widening required the existing culvert to be extended downstream; the integral deck avoided the need to undertake work within the watercourse.

Glory Park Bridge No.3

Glory Park Bridge No. 3 , a 7m span inverted T beam deck on piled abutments, was designed for HBG Design Ltd to carry an unadopted road over Chalk Stream in High Wycomb. The bridge was designed to carry HA loading and 30 units of HB to BD 37/01. High containment kerbs were used on the deck to prevent vehicular collision with the architectural parapets.

Glory Park Bridge No. 5

Glory Park Bridge No. 5, an 11.5m span prestressed SBB deck on piled abutments, was designed for HBG Design Ltd to carry an unadopted road over the River Wye in High Wycomb. The bridge was designed to carry HA loading and 30 units of HB to BD 37/01. High containment kerbs were used on the deck to prevent vehicular collision with the architectural parapets.

Clay Royds Footbridge

Clay Royd Bridge abutment stabilisation and re-decking for Wakefield MDC. Macalloy bars and gabion baskets were used to stabilise the towpath abutment. A new timber equestrian bridge was supplied and erected by CTS Ltd. The bridge is located deep in Haw Park Woods which made access difficult and influenced the method adopted to stabilise the abutment.

Hague Hall Beck Culvert

Hague Hall Beck Culvert, a 2.4m square box culvert 65m long, was designed for Wakefield MDC to carry Hague Hall Beck under a new link road for the Hemsworth to A1 Link Road Scheme.

Oakenshaw Lane Bridge

Network Rail's Oakenshaw Lane bridge deck was strengthened to carry accidental vehicle loading over the service bay. A steel box beam was designed to be accommodated within the service bay and to carry the loading by spanning between the abutments. The existing watermain in the service bay was relaid inside the new box beam. All the works were able to be carried out without rail possessions.

Design Checks and Assessment Checks

Balby Railway Bridge

A Category 3 Assessment Check and Design Check of strengthening works to Balby Railway Bridge for Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council. Balby Railway Bridge carries the A630 road over the East Coast Main Line Railway. The strengthening and refurbishment work included replacing the existing edge beam and service bay with SY beams and providing a H4a high containment concrete parapet.

Bradley Swing Bridge

A Category 2 Design Check of Bradley Swing Bridge for British Waterways. Bradley Swing Bridge carries an unclassified road over the Leeds & Liverpool Canal near Skipton. The bridge was designed to carry HA loading and 30 units of HB to BD 37/88.

Road Over Rail Bridge

A Category 2 Design Check of the Road over Rail Bridge for Wakefield Metropolitan District Council's Hemsworth to A1 Link Road. The 36m span integral SY beam bridge was designed by Grontmij for Wakefield MDC to carry the Hemsworth to A1 Link Road over the Doncaster Marshgate Junction to Whitehall Junction Electrified Line at Hemsworth.

Patch Swing Bridge

An Assessment Check of Patch Swing Bridge for British Waterways. Patch Swing Bridge carries an unclassified road over the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal 8 miles west of Stroud. The deck consists of steel main beams with timber deck planks in the nose span and insitu concrete in the tail span. The results of the original assessment were confirmed as being correct.

Hepworth Gallery Footbridge

A Category 3 Design Check of the Hepworth Gallery Footbridge for Wakefield Metropolitan District Council. The 50m long two span deck of steel box girders with aluminium decking was designed by Ramboll Whitbybird for Wakefield MDC to carry pedestrians over the River Calder in Wakefield.

Glasgow cience Centre Footbridge

A Category 2 Design Check of the Glasgow Science Centre Footbridge for M.G.Bennett & Associates Ltd. The 126m long six span deck (four fixed spans and two lifting spans) of triangular section tubular steel lattice frame construction with steel plate decking was designed to carry pedestrians over the River Clyde in Glasgow.

Assessments

Skotinis Bridge

A 9m high stone masonry arch on the old Limassol to Paphos road, Cyprus. The bridge was inspected and assessed in association with Lardis D. & Partners Ltd.
The bridge had reported to have been used by heavy plant during the construction of the new Limassol to Paphos highway and had suffered damage to one of the wing walls.

Peristerona Bridge

A multispan bridge in the centre of Peristerona in the north of Cyprus. The bridge consists of three stone masonry arches and end spans of transverse steel trough decking on steel beams. The bridge was inspected and assessed in association with Lardis D. & Partners Ltd.

Latsi Bridge

A three span reinforced concrete bridge on the north coast of Cyprus near Latsi. Large areas of concrete were spalling and reinforcement was corroding assisted by the saline environment adjacent to the coastline. The bridge was inspected and assessed in association with Lardis D. & Partners Ltd.

hapotami Bridge

Ha Potami bridge, a three span continuous reinforced concrete beam and slab bridge on the south coast of Cyprus near Paphos. Large areas of concrete were spalling and reinforcement was corroding assisted by the saline environment adjacent to the coastline. The bridge was inspected and assessed in association with Lardis D. & Partners Ltd.

Potten End Bridge

British Waterways' Potten End Bridge carries an unclassified road over the Grand Union Canal. A space frame analysis was carried out to assess the carrying capacity of the reinforced concrete arch saddle and to provide an HB rating.

Fort Augustus Swing Bridge

Fort Augustus Swing Bidge was assessed for BEAR Scotland Ltd. to determine whether the bridge was suitable to carry an Abnormal Load in excess of 150 tonnes. The bridge carries the A82 across the Caledonian Canal in the Highlands of Scotland.

Barrow Road Bridge

British Waterways' Barrow Road Bridge carries an unclassified road over the Trent & Mersey Canal. A rigorous analysis was required as the depth of fill at the crown is greater than the depth of the arch barrel. The results confirmed the MEXE analysis.

Bridge No's 1 & 4

Bridge No's 1 & 4 carry unadopted roads over Chalk Stream in High Wycombe. Assessments of the steel beam with reinforced concrete deck slab bridges were carried out on behalf of HBG Design Ltd. Material testing of the main steel beams was carried out to demonstrate that they were adequate for the Authorised Weight vehicles to BD 21/01.

Great Bridge

British Waterways' Great Bridge carries the A4035 over the B.C.N. (Walsall Canal). The prestressed concrete beam bridge deck was re-assessed using the latest assessment codes to improve the live load rating and also obtain an HB rating.

Kenilworth Road Bridge

British Waterways' Kenilworth Road Bridge carries the B4101 over the Grand Union Canal. A rigorous analysis was required as the depth of fill at the crown is greater than the depth of the arch barrel. The results confirmed the MEXE analysis.

High Street Elmsall Station Bridge

Network Rail's High Street Elmsall Station Bridge carries the B6474 over the Doncaster Marshgate Junction to Whitehall Junction Electrified Line at South Elmsall, West Yorkshire. The first stage assessment of the bridge's filler beam deck indicated a potential weakness in the edge beams (based on assumed steel and concrete strengths). Material testing was carried out to confirm that the filler beams were adequate for accidental wheel and vehicle loading to BD 21/01.

Mountsorrel Lock Bridge

British Waterways' Mountsorrel Lock Bridge carries the B674 over the River Soar Navigation. A rigorous analysis was required as the depth of fill at the crown is greater than the depth of the arch barrel. The results showed that taking the full H+D in the MEXE analysis was unconservative and the assessment rating should be reduced.

Vehicle Incursion Bridge Sites

Risk assessments of vehicle incursions on railways for 48 road over rail bridge sites were carried out for Wakefield MDC. Four bridge sites were identified where mitigation works were required. Open box beam safety fences were installed adjacent to the bridge parapets in the vulnerable areas.

Spon Lane Bridge

British Waterways' Spon Lane Bridge carries the B4031 over the Birmingham Canal Navigation Main Line. A rigorous analysis was required as the depth of fill at the crown is greater than the depth of the arch barrel. The results confirmed the MEXE analysis and also enabled an HB rating to be given.

Woodley Stone Bridge

British Waterways' Woodley Stone Bridge carries an unclassified road over the Peak Forest Canal. The MEXE analysis gave an 18t capacity using axle lift-off. A rigorous analysis improved the assessment rating.
